Please mind the traffic Road Less Travelled. We are not calling it by that name. People like their cars but no-one likes traffic. We have most of the permissions we need — inc. And, if Greek banks run out of money this week and the troika blocks liquidity sources, then Greece must print money immediately.

The Agora of Athens

Currently, the Holargos facility, has the capacity to print notes and mint coins. Since it prints Euro notes for 19 countries with With much fanfare Holargos began distributing updated Euro notes last year with new security features. Thus, its state-of-the-art presses print top-quality money. New drachmas printed this year would make Greek currency 2, years old and a source of pride for Greeks.

New currency laws would have to be enacted, businesses contracts updated, ATMs reprogrammed, and a public education program implemented so Greeks will know how to navigate the new currency environment and have access to the drachma conversion timetable. During the stopgap Greeks should continue using Euro coinage since drachma coins would be too difficult to mint quickly, but the new national coins should be distributed before the end of the year.

The Euro and the piggyback Drachma will be used at the same time. Perhaps the two currencies would start at a fixed one-to-one exchange rate for a period of time. This is normal practice. The euro debuted in as virtual money used for electronic transactions at a fixed rate against currencies that it replaced.

European debt crisis

Three years later Euro bills and coins were distributed as parallel currency with national currencies. There could be a dual pricing system where traders would give a certain price for payment in cash with euros, and another price for payment with a debit or credit card in drachmas.

What Will Likely Happen At the beginning the new currency will devalue which will increase the cost of imports. This factor would reduce real income. The government could offset that by lowering taxes or increasing benefits for the most vulnerable. However, exports including tourism would increase because they would be less expensive to foreigners, and that would increase incomes, and thus, tax revenues, which leads to financial stability.

Regarding domestic production, Greek consumers would search for less expensive local brands to replace the expensive foreign imports. Therefore, many Greek businesses would skyrocket and entrepreneurship would increase to create new products that Greeks had previously purchased from overseas. This improved business environment would lead to increased employment and higher wages in some sectors.

Though higher wages provide more tax revenues, they could hurt the helpful devaluation so the government might need to control wage growth for a while.
